India has striked a great deal with one of the biggest military powers in Central Asia, Uzbekistan. As many as 17 pacts have been signed between India and Uzbekistan, across various industries including defence training. There has been an agreement for a joint partnership in defence industry as India plans to gain back the strategic advantage that China is trying to leverage in Central Asia. There was agreement between Tashkent and Delhi about peaceful promotion of usage of nuclear energy as India targets uranium supplies from Uzbekistan.
For military education cooperation, a memorandum was finalized between the defence ministries of both countries, besides agreement on working cohesively for expansion and strengthening of defence cooperation as well as defence industry cooperation. All such arrangements materialized after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met visiting President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev. This India-Uzbekistan strategic tie-up with signing of various pacts is a step in the right direction.
