Prime Minister has inaugurated the nation’s first multi modal terminal on river Ganga, in Varanasi (his parliamentary constituency). Along with this, he also managed to receive India’s first container cargo that was transported via inland waterways from Kolkatta.
As a part of the Jal Marg Vikas project (that is supported by World Bank) of Inland Waterways Authority of India, this is first of the four multi-modal terminals to be built on River Ganga (National Waterway – 1). The overall cost of the project will be shared between World Bank and Government of India. Such projects are aimed at providing inland waterways as an affordable and easy means for transportation, specifically for cargo movement.
